1. Understand why guilt appears the moment you stop

Your brain has learned that rest means danger. That stopping means failure. Until you understand this programming, you’ll keep fighting yourself. Learn how your amygdala treats rest as a genuine threat. Once you see the pattern, you can interrupt it.

2. Challenge the “rest is lazy” belief

This one belief is keeping you trapped. Your high functioning anxiety has convinced you that your worth depends on your productivity. That’s why guilt appears the moment you stop. Write down your honest beliefs about rest. Then ask yourself: “Is this true, or is this my anxiety talking?”

3. Recognise rest is essential, not optional

Rest isn’t a reward you earn after being productive enough. It’s not something you fit in when everything else is done. Rest is what makes everything else possible. Your brain can’t function at its best when it’s running on empty. When you start to see rest as the foundation of your performance, not the opposite of it, everything shifts.

4. Explicit permission

Your subconscious needs to hear this. It controls 95% of your behaviour. If it hasn’t received explicit permission to rest, it will sabotage every attempt. Say it out loud: “I have permission to rest. Resting makes me more effective, not less.”

5. Schedule rest like a meeting

If it’s not scheduled, anxiety fills that space. You schedule everything else. Rest deserves the same commitment. Block 10 minutes daily for switching off. Treat it as a non-negotiable appointment with yourself.

Until you address the programming, you’ll keep pushing through exhaustion, feeling guilty every time you sit down, and resenting the rest you desperately need.
