1. Remember that rest isn’t laziness - it’s regulation

Your nervous system needs rest mode. With High Functioning Anxiety, you’re stuck in switched on mode constantly. Rest is where healing happens, where your brain consolidates information.

2. Understand your success is despite the exhaustion, not because of it

Imagine what would be possible if you weren’t running on fumes. How much clearer your thinking would be if you actually rested.

3. Reframe it as charging your battery

The alternative is running on 2% battery all day until you crash. Five minutes to charge yourself isn’t adding to your workload, it’s protecting it.

4. Give yourself permission to rest

Really, truly give yourself permission. Not “I’ll rest when I’ve finished everything.” It’s not optional, it’s necessary.

5. Recognise the guilt as your amygdala talking

That guilt? That’s your amygdala treating rest as a threat. It’s old programming. Every time over ride the guilt, you’re rewiring your brain.

6. Start with 5 minutes of genuine rest

Five minutes of genuine rest - not productive rest - actual rest. Read. Nap. Stare out the window. That’s all I’m asking.

7. Remember you’re the centre of your universe

If you collapse, everything suffers. But when you prioritise yourself and keep your nervous system regulated, you have capacity. Energy. Patience. Everyone benefits.

8. Know you’re teaching your brain that rest is safe

Right now your brain thinks that threats mean you need to achieve more. You’re teaching it something new: that it’s safe to rest. This takes practice, but it does happen. Consistently. Gradually. Genuinely.
