You’re holding down a job, relationships, and a to-do list that never quite ends. Somehow you’re still the one everyone else relies on to hold it together. From the outside, you’re coping brilliantly. From the inside, you’re running on fumes.
Women burn out at higher rates than men. Research from McKinsey found 43% of women leaders report burnout, compared to 31% of men at the same level. It’s rarely just about the workload. It’s about the invisible load underneath: noticing what needs doing before anyone asks. And being the one who keeps everything running. Always capable, but rarely the one who gets looked after.
The reason burnout keeps happening
The reasons burnout keeps happening are the same for everyone: people pleasing, perfectionism, not feeling good enough, and not being able to switch off. For many women, though, these patterns carry an extra layer. Saying no can feel like letting people down in a way that cuts deeper. Doing it all, and making it look easy, can feel like the baseline everyone measures you against. Rest can feel unearned, as if you don’t deserve it until everyone else comes first. In practice, that means never.
Midlife and menopause
For many women, this picture gets more complicated in midlife. Perimenopause and menopause bring their own symptoms: disrupted sleep, changes in mood, a dip in confidence, sometimes strain in relationships. They often arrive at exactly the point where years of burnout finally have nowhere left to hide. It can be hard to untangle what’s hormonal and what’s exhaustion. Often, it’s both, feeding into each other.
The good news: many of the issues linked to midlife come from the mind-body connection. That means there’s real scope to influence how you feel. It doesn’t have to be like this.
How I can help
Together, we get to the root of what’s driving the exhaustion, rather than treating the symptoms in isolation. That means understanding the patterns keeping you stuck. It means regulating a nervous system that’s been in survival mode for a long time. And it means building the self-compassion and confidence to put yourself back on the list. It’s entirely possible to be driven, capable and successful, without running yourself into the ground to prove it.
